A San Diego, California, woman took to TikTok to explain why she canceled a date just 15 minutes before it was set to begin. Recalling their first encounter, she said they met outside her home while she was walking her dog. By coincidence, the man was also out walking his dog, and when the two pets stopped to greet each other, their owners struck up a conversation that lasted about 15 to 20 minutes. She described the exchange as enjoyable, adding that the man was good-looking, funny, and charming. Before they parted ways, he asked for her number, and she gave it to him.

Two days later, he reached out to ask if she would like to get drinks with him. She agreed, and they began planning the date. Once they settled on a time and place, she made it clear that she did not drink alcohol and would only be having a mocktail. About 30 minutes before they were scheduled to meet, he texted to let her know he would be roughly 10 minutes late. She replied that it was not a problem and that she was looking forward to seeing him. In response, he said he was also looking forward to seeing her — and to getting her drunk. The woman said she initially took the comment as a joke and reminded him again that she did not drink.

After revisiting the issue twice more, with the man insisting he could persuade her to drink, the woman said they should not go out together if he expected that of her. He replied, “Okay, bet!”

Digital Community Rallies to Support and Validate Woman’s Decision

Netizens flooded the comment section with support for the woman, closely examining the potential date’s behavior and pointing to clear boundary violations. Many described him as a serious red flag. One commenter framed her decision to cancel as an act of self-preservation, writing, “Canceling the date was self-preservation. The only valid response.” Another emphasized that the man’s repeated boundary-pushing was a major warning sign. One user bluntly characterized his behavior as targeting vulnerable women, while another noted the disturbing nature of his language, particularly his focus on getting her drunk rather than proposing a mutually enjoyable experience.

Others praised the woman for trusting her instincts and refusing to dismiss his behavior as a joke. One person noted that she had given the man several opportunities to correct himself, yet he repeatedly failed to do so, making the decision to cancel the date necessary. Another commenter argued that his disregard for even simple preferences pointed to deeper issues around consent. Others echoed the same concern, observing that the man displayed a troubling number of red flags.

The incident and the online reactions it prompted have sparked broader conversations about personal boundaries. Many viewers emphasized the importance of trusting your instincts and prioritizing safety in unfamiliar situations.
