Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey sailed into the history books after becoming the first R-rated movie ever to cross $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office. The staggering milestone also gives star Tom Holland his fifth movie to reach the $1.5 billion club, and Marvel fans couldn’t resist having some fun with his increasingly ridiculous box-office record.

According to NDTV Profit, The Odyssey has now crossed the $1.5 billion mark worldwide, making it the first R-rated movie in history to reach that figure. The achievement adds to an already remarkable theatrical run for Nolan’s epic, which previously surpassed Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.

The success also marks another major box-office achievement for Tom Holland, with The Odyssey becoming the fifth movie featuring the actor to cross $1.5 billion worldwide. His previous four all came from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making Nolan’s epic the first time Holland has reached the milestone outside the superhero franchise.

Social Media Reactions

That particular achievement quickly caught the attention of movie fans online, with many having some fun with Holland’s increasingly impressive box-office record. Over on Reddit, one commenter joked, “Tom has nearly completed his gauntlet,” while another predicted that Avengers: Secret Wars could become his “sixth infinity stone.”

The wider list also gave movie fans plenty to talk about. One commenter pointed out that Disney owns 10 of the films to have crossed $1.5 billion, while noting that Avengers is the only franchise with three entries and Spider-Man and Avatar have two apiece. They were particularly impressed by Titanic remaining on the list decades later, calling its performance “phenomenal,” while also highlighting The Odyssey recently becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.

Others were already looking ahead to which movies could join the club next. One commenter confidently predicted, “Avengers Doomsday will be next making over $1.5B,” before suggesting Frozen 3 and Avengers: Secret Wars could eventually follow. They were particularly bullish on Secret Wars, predicting the Marvel blockbuster could make more than $2.5 billion worldwide and even have a shot at crossing $3 billion.
