A California man was stunned to discover his dog on Google Street View in Chapala, Mexico—more than 1,300 miles from his home in San Diego. He said he spent 16 hours over the course of a weekend exploring the area virtually before spotting Maya, his dog, sitting on a neighborhood sidewalk as a stray. Reddit user krishansonRCF shared the heartwarming discovery, along with photos of what he found, with thousands of users on r/googlestreetviewfinds.
“I came across this street and—boom—I immediately screamed. It’s one of those moments when you know your dog so well that you just know,” he said, explaining that he set Google Street View to 2019. That was the year Maya would have been in Chapala, before she was rescued in October 2020.
“I’m 99% sure it’s her, and I fully recognize I had, at best, about a 5% chance of actually finding her. But… when you know, you just know,” krishansonRCF wrote warmly. While many Redditors found OP’s discovery deeply touching, others admitted they had initially misunderstood his post, interpreting the title in a very different way.
“I thought you meant you lost your dog and then found her on Google Street View,” one commenter wrote. “Captivating title. Definitely had me in the first half. Are you in journalism or marketing? If not, you should be,” another joked. However, many people questioned his discovery, arguing that the photos he shared of Maya did not match the dog shown in the Street View image. The main point of debate was the stray dog’s paws: they appeared to be white, while Maya’s were not.
California Owner Explains Why His Dog’s Paws Look Different in Google Street View Image
Fortunately, OP had the evidence needed to convince people that the two photos showed the same dog. “Maya had pretty distinctive white socks when she was younger,” he explained, noting that over the years, her paws have gradually grown more and more tan.
OP shared additional details about Maya’s DNA testing and family history, all of which suggest that the timeline of her life as a street dog in Chapala is highly accurate. He also claims to have met the owner of Maya’s alleged daughter, who said the puppy had been rescued from the streets.
If the California owner’s findings and claims were not compelling enough, he also shared that he contacted the rescue group in Chapala to confirm whether the photo was authentic. “When they saw it, they said, ‘That’s Ivy!’ which was her name while at the rescue,” he wrote. Undoubtedly, it must have been incredibly rewarding to realize that all his effort and research had not been in vain.
