E-bike regulations vary widely across the United States. In California, however, they are generally treated similarly to traditional bicycles, with rules on sidewalk riding left to local city and county governments. In Cathedral City, California, an elderly man was filmed angrily confronting and harassing a child riding an e-bike following an alleged near miss. As you can imagine, this sparked a discussion on social media about who was in the right and who wasn’t.
The clip, recently posted to Reddit, shows a young e-bike rider caught in a heated confrontation with an elderly man. Wearing a blue-and-green tartan shirt, sunglasses, and a white cap, the elderly man can be heard shouting while holding his phone. The young e-bike rider remains silent as the man directs a series of verbal insults at him. Meanwhile, the bystander filming the incident from his vehicle criticizes the one harassing.
The bystander recording the encounter then asks the child if he’s alright, as the young rider appears visibly uncomfortable. After more back-and-forth, the elderly man insists that the kid should be on the road if he’s driving a motorized vehicle. However, the one with the camera remarks that the vehicle is electric, claiming the law doesn’t apply to that situation. Still, this does little to calm the man, who continues arguing, noting that it doesn’t matter what type of vehicle the kid is driving; it should be on the road.
Redditors React to The E-Bike Debacle in California Neighborhood
Reactions to the confrontation have been flooding in, with many viewers siding with the child on the e-bike. “Cops need to come and almost give that kid a ticket.”
“The older guy may not have the best approach, but the dude filming was also kind of an ass as well.”
Some other users also praised the one who recorded everything and stood up for the child.
“Thank you to the man who stayed there to stand up for the kid.“
Many others commented that this situation was blown out of proportion. For starters, the kid wasn’t doing anything wrong or driving something that would harm pedestrians. The truth is that several other Redditors believe that it is great for kids to drive these vehicles on the sidewalk, as it is safer for them.
Fortunately, and despite how chaotic the situation got, it seems it didn’t escalate further, and the only person who was exposed was the “male karen,” as many dubbed him in the comments.
