‘Punishing Everyone Is Lazy’: Missouri Restaurant Owner Disciplines Entire Staff Over One Employee’s Mistake

After discovering a costly mistake made by one of his employees, a restaurant owner in Missouri decided to punish his entire staff. According to the owner, someone at the restaurant failed to fully close a cooler, causing the food and ingredients inside to warm up to 74°F. He claimed that this type of mistake “happens way too often” and insisted that the entire team should face disciplinary action as a result.

My old restaurant owner just posted this. Been out of the game for years, wondering what y'all think about this reaction?

The restaurant owner shared the announcement with his staff in a Facebook group. Reddit user Merv1618 later posted a screenshot of it on r/KitchenConfidential. Although Merv1618 says he no longer works at the restaurant, he remains in the Facebook group, along with several other former employees.

The owner’s punishment was to withhold free staff meals from his employees for a week—a benefit that was likely part of their employment agreement. Hundreds of Redditors had mixed reactions to the owner’s response.

Reddit Weighs In

On one hand, many argued that his anger should have been directed at the supervisor or whoever was responsible for closing up. Additionally, plenty of people felt that his “group punishment” was unnecessary and would likely only cause his staff to resent him. However, a sizable minority believed the owner was justified in being upset and that the staff needed to understand the seriousness of the mistake.

“Why is there not a manager or closer doing a walkthrough at the end of the night?? Does nobody double-check the restaurant before closing?” exclaimed a commenter. “The closing manager is the one who needs to be taking the heat here,” remarks another person in agreement.

“Collective punishment is a lazy way for an owner or manager to avoid addressing issues with individual staff members,” a third Redditor pointed out.

On the flip side, some sided with the owner and his behavior. “Absolutely the wrong reaction by him for many reasons, but I have to say if we had a problem with fridges not getting closed right I’d be pretty pissed too,” said a Redditor. “At a certain point you have to punish stupidity. Those servers have to be a bunch lazy half-wits to not figure this out,” added a second.

Unfortunately, it’s ultimately a lose-lose situation for everyone involved. Regardless of whether the owner handles the staff discipline appropriately, a significant amount of food was likely wasted due to someone’s mistake. Any financial loss to the business affects the entire team in the end.
