A new Michigan homeowner has sparked curiosity and concern after discovering a hidden room in their basement, sectioned off and containing only a mattress. The homeowner says the square-shaped space is “completely walled off” and can only be seen by using a ladder, though many online commenters are skeptical about just how inaccessible it really is. Although the house is reportedly just 19 years old, thousands of Reddit users believe the unusual space may already be hiding unsettling secrets.
Reddit user u/agoss123b shared a video of their new home on r/Weird, filming a basement room from atop a ladder positioned between the joists. “There is no way in/out of the room. The joists are too close together, even if you could somehow climb up the wall without a ladder,” they explained.
When asked whether they still planned to purchase the property despite the bizarre discovery, they said they would likely move forward with the purchase regardless. “If I buy it, I’ll definitely be tearing down the wall, cleaning it out, and opening the space up. I’ll probably involve the police when I do,” they said. However, many people remained concerned about what the hidden space might reveal.
Many Believe Someone Had Been Living in the Room Illegally or Was Placed There Without Authorization
“This looks like someone was imprisoned here,” one person wrote. Another commenter agreed: “Either someone was illegally squatting there, or someone was being held there against their will. File a police report either way.” A third added, “I’d be shocked if no crime had been committed on that mattress.”
When asked whether the hidden room had any noticeable odor, OP replied that there was “no smell at all.”
One sharp-eyed Redditor quickly pointed out that something—or someone—might still be inside the sealed-off space, judging by the angle of the pink board leaning on the right. The visible gap between the wall and the slanted board suggests that something behind it is holding it in place.
As for where the rectangular cutout in the drywall leads, agoss123b shared a photo of the room in which the outline of the previously covered opening is just barely visible. Although it is blocked off now, OP notes that “it was open at one point.”
For anyone curious about the video’s mysterious background conversation—the comment about a “60% chance of dying” from a Dorito—OP clarified that it was simply their “realtor yapping to the inspector.” Walled-off rooms may still be unsettling, but at least that particular mystery has been put to rest.
