A Massachusetts resident says a friend took matters into their own hands and threw out their television without permission. Reddit user Virtual_Ordinary_172, who described themselves as the victim of this decidedly unfriendly act, said they later found the TV in the trash.
According to their post on r/mildlyinfuriating, the friend claimed the set was “a fire hazard.” But this wasn’t a modern OLED or LCD television; it was an antique, specifically a “CRT from the ’50s.” Virtual_Ordinary_172 said their friend threw out the CRT despite it being “in working condition.” They also believe the friend was far from careful while tossing it into the trash, leaving the screen damaged. OP says the speaker still works, but the monitor no longer functions properly.
Allegedly, this CRT is no cheap piece of junk. According to Virtual_Ordinary_172, it “costs more than a small dog or a bike.” While they plan to send the TV in for repairs, many commenters questioned why OP’s friend would have thrown it away in the first place, especially since it had been working.
Reddit Criticized the Roommate for Messing With Things That Don’t Belong to Them
It seems pretty obvious that you shouldn’t touch or take someone else’s belongings, even when they look like trash to us; but apparently not many people, like the OP’s roommate, understand this basic rule of coexistence. In addition, several Redditors pointed out that some items become collectibles, while others are emotionally valuable.
“Clearly looks like a collector’s piece for someone who loves old tech; why would anyone throw that out…”
Many others criticized the alleged friend’s actions, noting that a CRT television is not typically considered a particularly high fire risk compared with many other household appliances and electronics.
“Who touches other people’s stuff without permission?!”
“Who cares if the TV is ‘trash’ or not – your roommate should not be throwing away your belongings regardless of what they think of them! ” They should just unplug it if they think it’s an actual hazard, then talk to you about it later.”
Some commenters tried to play devil’s advocate, suggesting the old CRT was a waste of space anyway. However, it seems highly unlikely that Virtual_Ordinary_172 plans to let a Massachusetts trash service haul away their TV.
