Dan Stevens has officially landed one of science fiction’s most iconic roles, stepping into the metal suit as Alex Murphy in Prime Video’s upcoming live-action RoboCop series.

According to Deadline, the Downton Abbey, Legion and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire star will play Detroit police officer Alex Murphy — and his cybernetic alter ego RoboCop — in Prime Video’s upcoming live-action television series.

The casting marks the first major announcement since Amazon MGM Studios officially ordered the eight-episode series last month. The show is being written and executive produced by Peter Ocko, with James Wan also serving as an executive producer through Blumhouse Atomic Monster.

The series will once again follow Murphy, a respected police officer whose consciousness is implanted into a powerful law enforcement machine after he is killed in the line of duty. Like Paul Verhoeven’s original 1987 film, the new adaptation will explore the intersection of technology, corporate power and policing through the story of the iconic cyborg officer.

Stevens brings plenty of genre experience to the role. In recent years, he has starred in Legion, The Guest, Abigail, Cuckoo and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, earning a reputation for taking on unconventional science fiction and horror projects.

The role has previously been played by Peter Weller in the original RoboCop and its first sequel, Robert Burke in RoboCop 3, and Joel Kinnaman in the 2014 remake. Stevens now becomes the latest actor to step into the character as Amazon looks to bring the franchise to a new generation of viewers.

While Prime Video has not yet announced a release date, the casting suggests the long-awaited series is continuing to move forward after spending several years in development. With one of its biggest roles now filled, fans may not have to wait much longer before getting their first official look at the new RoboCop.
