Money is tight, and finding decent work can be a real challenge. But one Florida mother discovered that, for some businesses, a “Now Hiring” sign does not always mean what it appears to. Reddit user Muscle_mama_ shared a post on r/recruitinghell about a Domino’s location in her area that had a “Now Hiring” sign on display. However, according to her, the sign could not have been further from the truth. She soon learned it was allegedly nothing more than “mandatory signage,” rather than an indication that the store was actually hiring.
Muscle_mama_ claims she went inside and asked the staff about available positions for new hires, only to be told there were none. In reality, the “Now Hiring” sign apparently meant nothing; it was displayed simply because management required it. “This crap should be illegal. What’s the point of this?” the mother said in frustration. Thousands of Redditors appeared to share her irritation.
Reddit Strongly Condemns Businesses for Putting up “Now Hiring” Signs When They Aren’t Actually Hiring
Many users initially thought that the poster had probably been up for years, and some believe that this makes it even worse; it misleads people and gives them false hope that they’ll be hired.
“Gives the impression the business is successful. People can’t get enough of their bread and meat things,”
“It absolutely should be illegal. Businesses who lie to ‘look’ successful shouldn’t be businesses. Also, keeping a constant hiring sign up gives the impression that management/the job can’t keep anybody, which imo gives the opposite impression.”
“Thanks to this, old people think every place in town is hurting for workers and that young people just don’t want to work.”
“Why put a sign that you’re hiring at a location that isn’t hiring?”
Muscle_mama_ noted that many unemployed people are desperate for work right now, especially as costs continue to rise across nearly every area of daily life. In her view, a “Now Hiring” sign that remains posted despite there being no available jobs amounts to “false advertising.”
On the other hand, one commenter raised a fair point, suggesting that the sign could refer to Domino’s as a chain rather than that specific location. In other words, some stores may be hiring, even if the one in Muscle_mama_’s Florida area allegedly is not. The franchise owner may also be required to display the signage due to corporate policy.
