Erika Kirk Urges Michigan College Graduates to Marry Young and Embrace Gender Roles: ‘You Are Called to Nurture’

Eight months after her husband was assassinated, Erika Kirk stood at the podium at Hillsdale College in Michigan and accepted an honorary doctorate of public service for both herself and Charlie Kirk. Facing nearly 5,000 graduating seniors, she encouraged them to get married young and understand the roles they would face.

During her keynote at Hillsdale’s 174th graduation, Erika shared memories from her marriage to Charlie, such as late-night talks about history and philosophy, and how he finished Hillsdale’s online courses on their honeymoon. Then she turned to the graduates. “Charlie would often encourage people to get married young – not rushed, but young,” she said.

Then she drew a clear line: “Men, you’re called to provide, to lead, to anchor your families in strength and consistency. Women, you’re called to nurture, to build, to shape lives with wisdom and endurance.”

When the school announced Erika as speaker back in March, the student newspaper reported some seniors worried her appearance would politicize the day and take away from the class’s achievements. On graduation morning, a group called Hope in Action organized a protest outside the ceremony, per The College Fix.

Internet Reacts To Erika Kirk’s Michigan College Commencement Address

The marry young message drew immediate pushback online, though not all of it was hostile. One comment went for the economic reality underneath the advice: “This message doesn’t mean much when very few people can afford to have a family right now. She means well, but it’s just not realistic.” Another tied it directly to policy: “Ok, right after Trump makes that possible through our economy and the other things that make having a family possible.”

The irony angle came up quickly. “Rules for thee, not for me,” one person wrote simply. Another pulled the thread on Charlie Kirk’s own complicated relationship with higher education: “Didn’t Charlie Kirk denounce colleges and say people don’t need it?”

One comment took the sharpest line of the thread, framing the message in starkly political terms: “Remember ladies, your number one job is to be a brood mare for the state so there’s more sons and daughters to be killed in US wars of empire.”

Hillsdale College has its own reputation, a private Christian school in southern Michigan, around since 1844, known for its classical approach to education and its choice to turn down state or federal money. That’s a big reason why conservatives across the country look to Hillsdale. Erika Kirk closed out this academic year for the class of 2026, giving a message her husband delivered on college campuses everywhere.
