Amid the tense political climate in the United States, it can sometimes feel as though nearly everything has become a point of contention. For one woman working at a grocery store in Texas, that conflict has surfaced in the workplace. At the center of the dispute is her religious headscarf, which she claims her boss is now pressuring her to remove. Reddit user Normal-Brick1722 shared her experience on r/legaladvice, explaining that she has worked as a cashier at the grocery store for two years and had never faced any issues over wearing her headscarf until recently, when co-workers reportedly began “finding it unfair.”
According to the post, Normal-Brick1722’s supervisor recently tightened the workplace dress code. The supervisor had previously been aware that OP wore her headscarf for religious reasons and had even publicly acknowledged her accommodation on one occasion. However, since the dress code became stricter, OP’s co-workers have allegedly told the supervisor that they object to seeing Normal-Brick1722 wear her headscarf.
“I’m deeply disappointed and feel this is unjustified. This can’t be legal, right?” OP wrote. She went on to explain that she had been offered “alternatives” in the form of company-approved headwear to cover the top of her head. Still, she felt the situation was unfair. “Would I be putting my job in jeopardy by continuing to show up in my headscarf?” she asked, turning to Reddit for advice.
Redditors Weigh In
Thousands of Redditors upvoted one commenter’s advice: “Continue wearing your headscarf. Do not take it off. If you voluntarily remove it, the company could argue you accepted the change.” The commenter explained why they firmly believe Normal-Brick1722 should be permitted to wear her headscarf. Under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, she is entitled to reasonable religious accommodation, and if her employer attempts to violate that right, she can file a discrimination charge.
Others weighed in, advising Normal-Brick1722 to wait until her company’s management puts the verbal dress code rule in writing, which would make it easier to challenge legally. “HR will either correct management, or be stupid enough to shoot themselves in the foot and reinforce that you can’t wear it,” one commenter wrote.
Normal-Brick1722 has not yet provided an update on her workplace situation regarding her headscarf. However, based on Redditors’ comments on her post, she has every right to wear her religious headwear. Whether her co-workers will change their perspective on it being “unfair” remains to be seen.
