Authenticity is especially important in romantic relationships, but one man in Florida apparently thought ChatGPT could handle the charm for him. Unfortunately, his date noticed sooner than he likely expected and exposed the situation on r/mildlyinfuriating. Posting under the username Healermoonchild, the woman shared evidence showing that his supposedly heartfelt messages were actually AI-generated texts.
“I had a feeling he was using ChatGPT because it sounded exactly like the responses I get when I talk to ChatGPT,” Healermoonchild wrote. In her post, she included screenshots showing ChatGPT generating the same witty replies her date had sent her. “It wasn’t just that one message,” she added. “It was text after text—each one suspiciously polished and well-constructed.”
Healermoonchild explained that she had used ChatGPT excessively after recently going through a breakup. For anyone who uses the AI chatbot regularly, it can often be fairly easy to recognize when someone else is relying on it, too. According to OP, this man’s in-person personality doesn’t match the way he texts her. Creative or funny comments don’t seem to come naturally to him face-to-face or even over the phone.
“I’m not texting him, someone real. I’ve been texting ChatGPT,” Healermoonchild sighed. Thousands of Redditors shared her disappointment, with hundreds expressing disdain for her date’s apparent obsession with ChatGPT. Some jokingly suggested she ask him to “hold three fingers in front of his face” to prove he was real—though that hardly seemed necessary, given that she claimed to have already met him in person twice.
Social Media Reactions
“I’d stop dating him immediately. Just let him date a chatbot,” suggested one person. “Put his texts into ChatGPT and see how long until he notices he’s in a loop,” recommended another, to which OP chuckled in response, “Hahahaha ChatGPT dating ChatGPT.”
Plenty of other Reddit users were rather harsh on the man. “This can’t be real. If someone is so much of an NPC [that] they’re responding to their dates with ChatGPT, I can assure you that you do not want to breed with that person,” wrote a commenter in disbelief. “I truly couldn’t be friends with ANYONE like this, let alone date them,” remarked another.
At the very least, Healermoonchild discovered her date’s heavy use of AI before the relationship progressed too far, especially given how clearly it bothered her. Although she hasn’t confirmed whether she plans to keep seeing him, her opinion of him seems to have dropped significantly, as reflected in comments like, “Maybe he doesn’t have a personality.”
