‘This Breaks My Heart’: Kentucky Teacher Accused of Failing Student for Being ‘Too Poor’ to Dress Professionally

Growing up in poverty is difficult enough, but being punished for it is especially heartbreaking. That was the experience of one girl in Kentucky during middle school. Reddit user RaeFullyPoweredBeam shared the story on r/mildlyinfuriating, recalling how she received a low grade on a major school project simply because she was unable to “dress professionally.”

RaeFullyPoweredBeam explained that the project focused on “career preparedness” and required students to participate in a mock job interview, which made up a significant portion of their grade. “I grew up really poor. I didn’t have clothes for the mock interview, and my parents couldn’t afford to buy me anything for it either,” OP recalled.

Still, her parents did everything they could with the limited resources they had, from carefully cleaning their daughter’s worn clothing to lending her their own clothes for the interview. When the big moment had passed and the teacher’s grade came in, the student learned she had failed. “The teacher doing the interview said I answered the questions well and had a good demeanor, but I didn’t dress professionally,” RaeFullyPoweredBeam wrote sadly.

She said she never told her parents why she failed the mock interview for the school project, but she wonders whether they might have been able to explain their financial hardship to the school—possibly leading to a better grade. Her story deeply moved thousands of Redditors, many of whom shared their own painful experiences growing up in low-income households.

Reddit Weighs In

“This is horrible for a school to do this, especially when they know that some of their students are poor. What kind of school grades anything on clothes without providing the clothes?” one person commented in disgust.

“The fact that you never told your parents is the part that gets me. They did everything they could, and you took the hit quietly to protect them from feeling like it wasn’t enough. That shows more maturity than that teacher ever did,” another commenter added. RaeFullyPoweredBeam responded warmly, saying that her parents are the “greatest in the world.”

“This breaks my heart. I’m so sorry you felt you had to hide this from your parents and carry it alone for so long,” a third commenter wrote. Many others echoed that sentiment, expressing their sadness for OP and emphasizing that both she and her parents deserved better.

Though the situation is unfair, the Kentucky parents are fortunate to have a daughter who still believes she has a wonderful mom and dad—parents for whom she says she is “forever grateful.” In a heartfelt comment, she wrote, “Our parents loved us and did everything they could for us, and I carry that with me every day.”
