A frightening moment was captured on a doorbell camera in Ohio after a child accidentally shifted an SUV into reverse, sending the vehicle rolling toward the street. The footage shows the alarming sequence unfold as nearby adults quickly rush in to help.
In the video, the SUV can be seen slowly rolling backward as the child remains inside, while nearby adults react moments later. As the vehicle continues moving, the child can be heard calling out, “Mama!”
The mother, who is seated nearby, quickly springs into action and rushes toward the vehicle, shouting in response as the situation unfolds. At the same time, another family member runs out from the home after dropping what she is holding, heading toward the SUV as it rolls across the driveway.
While trying to intervene, she trips over the grass and onto the street. The SUV continues rolling, briefly going up a neighboring driveway before slowly rolling back down toward the road and coming to a stop.
Social Media Reacts to the Ohio Doorbell Camera Footage
The doorbell footage has since circulated online, drawing a wide range of reactions from viewers responding to both the sudden escalation and the family’s frantic effort to intervene. Many commenters focused on how quickly the situation unfolded and how easily it could have led to a far more serious outcome.
On Reddit, one user shared a particularly personal account, writing, “My brother was killed this way when he was a toddler. He was hit by the car that rolled across the street into our yard after an unattended kid inside put it in gear. Glad this one only ended in [expletive] up knees for the adult,” highlighting the potential severity of similar incidents.
Others took a more relieved view of how it ended, with one commenter noting, “They got off pretty lucky, the car didnt hit anything,” pointing to the fact that no major damage or collision occurred. Another user focused on parental responsibility, adding, “Leaving a kid in front seat of car is a choice,” reflecting criticism of how the situation unfolded.
A fourth commenter reacted more casually to the aftermath, simply writing, “That knee will hurt tomorrow,” referencing the fall captured in the footage.
Although the incident did not appear to result in a serious collision, the footage has drawn widespread attention online because of how quickly the situation escalated — and how easily it could have ended much worse. The clip has also renewed discussion about vehicle safety and the importance of never leaving children unattended in or around cars.
At the time of writing, officials have not released any updates regarding potential injuries from the incident.
