A Virginia representative is facing intense backlash after appearing to endorse a statement widely viewed as racially insensitive, seemingly without fully considering its implications. The controversy unfolded during an interview that has since gone viral in a recording shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. In the clip, taken from a program identified as Richmond’s Morning News, a speaker is heard criticizing Hakeem Jeffries’ involvement in Virginia politics, urging him to return to New York if he intended to interfere in the state’s affairs.
The speaker then added, “Get your cotton-picking hands off of Virginia,” conveying what they believed Jeffries should do. Rep. Jen Kiggans, a guest on the show, immediately agreed, responding, “That’s right. Ditto. Yes to that!”
According to CNN, Kiggans, a Republican congresswoman, appeared on the program to discuss the state’s redistricting dispute. However, after the clip resurfaced online, she was forced to defend her response amid mounting calls for her resignation. Addressing the controversy, Kiggans emphasized that she does not endorse Herrera’s remarks, while claiming that the backlash against her has been fueled by false claims from Democrats.
Regardless of Rep. Kiggans’ intention, the controversy serves as a clear reminder of the importance of being careful, thoughtful, and deliberate with language, especially during public broadcasts where words can be heard, interpreted, and shared by a wide audience. Public officials are often held to a high standard because their remarks can influence public conversation, shape perceptions, and affect the communities they represent. In moments of heightened attention, even a brief statement or poorly chosen phrase can quickly become the focus of criticism and debate. For that reason, this situation underscores the need for precision, awareness, and sensitivity when speaking in public settings, particularly on issues that may carry political, social, or personal significance for rabid listeners.
