Washington City Council Sparks Debate After Removing Pride Flag: ‘What a Waste of Resources’

A photo posted on r/pics showing a man holding a sign that reads “Out-woked by Yakima” is drawing attention on Reddit and sparking discussion about the politics of Lynnwood, Washington. According to the poster, Reddit user bennetthaselton, the Lynnwood City Council recently held a meeting to discuss whether the Pride flag should be removed. “Comments here are vicious,” bennetthaselton noted, referring to reactions to the post.

“It’s genuinely baffling given that I attended the city’s official Pride Month acknowledgment as an invited guest back in 2023. Insane how fast things pivoted,” remarked a commenter in disbelief. One person claimed that much of this push could be from conservative immigrants, those who’ve never talked about LGBTQIA+ back in their countries but have now been influenced by “astroturfed channels.”

Online Users Threw Shade at Yakima for Its Culture and Politics

As for the poster about Yakima from the photo, several people were quite harsh about Yakima, a city allegedly represented by Republican politicians in Washington. “In case anyone doesn’t get it from context, Yakima county is rural and honestly kinda trash,” laughed a commenter. “My family once went on a road trip that took us through Yakima. My mom still calls it Yuckima a decade later,” joked another.

Speaking of harsh, several commenters were upset that a conversation about a pride flag at a city hall meeting was being brought up at all. “What a waste of resources to have a meeting to decide wether or not to fly a flag,” sighed a user. Another person believes flags should be done away with entirely: “Humanity would be better off discarding these divisive totems entirely in favor of clear communication, shared reason, and cooperation unburdened by arbitrary territorial mascots.”

Plenty of other places across the US have also seen a surge of anti-LGBTQIA+ behavior, causing multiple institutions to take down their Pride flags. Whether it’s a good or bad change will differ depending on political stance, but simply hearing about it being discussed at a city council meeting is bound to spark some heated debate.
