When it comes to stereotypes, every state has something. Florida is the weird one, Texas is the unhinged one, and in Ohio, one city has gained a bit of a reputation thanks to a group of people. Who are we talking about? Well, none other than the Columbus drivers of the great Ohio state. At first, it all became a meme. People somehow flip cars over, not using the right lanes correctly and just causing vehicular mayhem everywhere they go. However, this has become a reality that surpasses the meme. If you don’t believe us, let’s take a look at some of the situations Columbus has been a part of.
Living Life in the Left Lane
Let’s start with the obvious part about Columbus drivers: the left lane. Many motorists out there know what this lane is for (or so I hope). It is known as the “fast lane” in terms everyone can understand. Normally, people use this to overtake slower vehicles and just to go at a fast speed. However, it shouldn’t be a lane to hug all the time and stick with throughout your entire journey.
The above post from Reddit user at614inthe614 perfectly showcases the matter. The picture shows the I-71 with a few cars, but all of them are using the middle and left lanes. It may not seem weird, but Columbus drivers seem terrified of using the right lane, as the OP so excellently demonstrates. This keeps feeding the stereotype of drivers in this city being all about going fast without respecting traffic laws at all.
However, this leads to an even more worrying situation. With the right lane being empty, people now use it as the high-speed lane, which is unacceptable. Even the OP, which has a point when sharing the weird state of Columbus highways, also shows how people now stick to the right lane to speed up in hopes of passing everyone since other drivers are fighting over the middle and left lanes. In any case, these are highly dangerous situations that have sadly become normal for people in Columbus.
Look at the Facts

If you feel I’m just saying things for the sake of saying them without solid evidence, apart from the above right-hand lane debacle, let’s take a look at some solid numbers. Back in 2022, the website QuoteWizard analyzed the worst drivers in the US, and Ohio came out in the top five. It isn’t cause for celebration, though.
As you can see in the above image, Ohio ranks quite high in terms of citations and speeding infractions, which is not great. Yes, the data is from 2022, and people are still crunching the numbers for 2025. Still, it is worrying to see how Ohio ranked so high in two of the worst categories.
Yet, there’s a sliver of hope for all Columbus drivers out there. It seems that, despite the shenanigans, car wrecks, pole crashes, and more, the state climbed the ranks last year, and it isn’t one of the worst anymore. It isn’t one of the best either, but we all have to start somewhere.
According to a recent study by Lending Tree, Ohio ranked #25 in the best/worst drivers in the country, putting itself right in the middle, which isn’t bad at all. Still, the state, especially Columbus, has a long way to go.
Never a Dull Moment, Though
All that being said, it isn’t just Columbus’ fault since it seems all drivers in Ohio have problems with traffic laws and regulations. Why? Well, it’s a little uncertain. Maybe life just goes too fast for Ohioans out there. The infrastructure doesn’t help either, and that’s certainly not the people’s fault. Still, it is strange to see how Columbus and its surroundings house so many bad drivers that endanger themselves and others around them.
Ultimately, Columbus and Ohio as a whole can rest easy knowing one thing: they aren’t the worst city and state when it comes to driving. New Mexico, Illinois, and New York are even more chaotic. However, when it comes to commuters that make us facepalm and shake our heads with their driving shenanigans, yes, Columbus takes the crown. It isn’t something to be proud of, but it isn’t the worst, either.
