A Carlsbad, California, cyclist might’ve shown that this state has the worst cyclists across the country. We’ve seen many situations of these poor commuters getting hit by cars or falling because someone else got in their way. However, it is very rare for them to be the cause of an accident. One of these rare occurrences shows a cyclist minding his own business on a highway when he collides with a police officer who is towing a vehicle on the side of the road. As many put it, the one on the bicycle had all the time in the world to avoid the collision, and what seems to be a very expensive fine.
Cyclist Collides With Cop’s Motorcycle
The clip comes from the r/whatcouldgowrong subreddit, where we can observe a California cyclist colliding with a police officer’s motorcycle, doing a mid-air flip, and landing on the ground. While that is already shocking, what makes the whole thing stranger is that this person had all the time in the world to avoid this accident.
As you can see in the footage, the man on the bicycle is riding at a somewhat normal speed on his lane. However, there isn’t a steep curve ahead or something that blocks his vision. You can clearly see the police officer, the tow truck owner, and the three vehicles, including the motorcycle, parked on the side of the road. Plus, the man on the bicycle has plenty of space to go around them. Instead of doing the right thing and avoiding those on the road, he rides face-first into the motorcycle, destroying several parts of it, and then falls on the ground.
The video cuts shortly after that, because, according to the one who posted the video, it was all captured on a Tesla dashcam. Still, it seems the cyclist was unharmed, as he was able to sit after doing the totally avoidable flip. Yet, that doesn’t mean he came out unscathed from the situation.
Ultimately, the man collided with a police officer, and sadly, it was the cyclist’s fault, regardless of the angle you look at it. As I mentioned before, there were many opportunities for him to avoid the collision, but I guess he was either distracted or froze once he saw the cop in front of him.
In any case, a lot of people have shared some hilarious thoughts on the situation.
“Bro had 3 to 5 business days to dodge them.” – Ptskp via Reddit.
“He’s a cyclist; the world revolves around them.” – MostJudgement3212 via Reddit.
“Inb4 the pro-cyclist-no-matter-what crowd blames cars.” – alexthegreatmc via Reddit.
While the outcome of the collision is uncertain, we can all agree that this cyclist is going to be in big trouble with the law. Yet, as many Redditors put it, he might find a way to blame the bystanders. Not to follow the stereotypes, but some cyclists can be quite the victims sometimes, even if they are the ones causing the accident.
Still, there’s a silver lining to all of this. The man is fine, and the other vehicles are also unscathed, at least from what we see in the video. If the flying bicycle had hit the other cars, the problem would’ve been worse.
Also, we should be glad that the bicycle didn’t hit the people on the highway or that the cyclist didn’t fly off the road and get hit by a car. This collision could’ve escalated in unimaginable ways, so this is undoubtedly the “best” outcome for those involved. In the end, all that remains is to pay for the expenses, get checked out at the hospital for any injuries, and likely face a fine from the police officer.
