At this point, Andrew Garfield could tell Marvel fans the sky is blue and they’d probably still want photographic evidence. The Spider-Man star has once again insisted that he won’t be suiting up for Avengers: Doomsday, but after spending months denying his involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home before ultimately swinging into the movie, fans are understandably having a hard time taking his word for it.
According to Variety, Garfield was asked outright whether he’ll appear in Avengers: Doomsday, and his answer was a pretty firm no. However, when pressed on whether fans should actually believe him this time around, the actor offered a rather familiar-sounding response: “You’ll find out, I suppose, one way or another.” Given his track record of keeping Marvel’s secrets under wraps, that probably isn’t going to convince too many people.
Of course, Garfield has been here before. In the run-up to Spider-Man: No Way Home, the actor repeatedly denied that he was returning as Peter Parker, only to eventually appear alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire in one of the movie’s biggest surprises. That history means every Marvel denial from Garfield now comes with a rather large asterisk, and with Avengers: Secret Wars still looming after Doomsday, fans aren’t exactly ready to rule out another trip through the multiverse just yet.
Marvel Fans Aren’t Buying Andrew Garfield’s Denial
Marvel fans, unsurprisingly, aren’t entirely convinced. Garfield’s No Way Home poker face is still fresh in plenty of minds, with one Reddit user immediately pointing out, “He said the same lie in the past.” Another jokingly responded, “Alright then, keep your secrets…”
Others were more willing to believe Garfield may genuinely be sitting Doomsday out, although that hasn’t stopped speculation about what comes next. “I believe he’s not in Doomsday, but my guy better be in Secret Wars,” one fan wrote. Another offered a similar theory, predicting, “I think only Tobey’s Spider-Man shows up in Doomsday but all three (Tobey, Andrew & Tom) will be in Secret Wars.”
Whether that theory proves true remains to be seen. But after No Way Home, Garfield has only himself to blame if Marvel fans treat every denial like another potential piece of misdirection.
