Gal Gadot Says Wonder Woman 3 and Henry Cavill’s Superman Exit Were ‘Not Handled Elegantly,’ Fans React: ‘The DC Universe Being Very DC’

Gal Gadot has opened up about the end of her time as Wonder Woman, revealing that she was initially told a third movie would be developed with her before DC Studios ultimately moved in a different direction. The actress also criticized how the studio handled the departures of Henry Cavill and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, saying the situations were “not handled elegantly.”

According to Variety, Gadot discussed the situation during an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. When asked whether DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran had formally told her she would not return as Wonder Woman, Gadot revealed that she had actually been told the opposite and that a third movie would be developed with her. However, she said the way Cavill and Jenkins were subsequently handled made the direction of the revamped DC Universe increasingly clear.

Cavill’s departure was particularly controversial at the time. The actor returned as Superman for a cameo in Black Adam and subsequently announced that he was officially back in the role, only for those plans to change after Gunn and Safran took control of DC Studios. Gadot suggested that both Cavill and Jenkins deserved better treatment during the transition, although she stressed that there are no hard feelings now, saying that everyone involved has moved on.

Social Media Reactions

Gadot’s comments prompted plenty of discussion on Reddit, where even some of her critics agreed that DC could have handled the transition better. One commenter wrote, “Listen, I don’t like her (bad actress that supports bad causes) but she’s not wrong. DCEU did handle that poorly.”

Others debated how much responsibility Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson should shoulder for the confusion surrounding Cavill’s brief Superman return. “Blame the Rock,” one person wrote, although another pushed back, arguing, “The DCEU was completely cooked regardless of the Rock.”

Several viewers were less surprised by Gadot’s assessment, joking that messy decision-making had become something of a tradition for the franchise. “Handling things poorly is kind of DCU’s thing tbf,” one commenter quipped, while another summed it up as, “The DC universe being very DC.”

Not everyone was particularly sympathetic toward Gadot, however. One commenter took a more cynical view of her time with the franchise, writing, “I mean she made a bunch of money for poor acting. She won.”

Whatever fans think of the old DCEU, it is hard to deny that its final years involved plenty of behind-the-scenes uncertainty. With Gunn and Safran now firmly steering DC in a new direction, Gadot appears ready to move on as well, although her comments suggest the changing of the guard could perhaps have been handled a little more gracefully.
