There’s a particular kind of frustration that comes from not receiving exactly what you paid for. This feeling was vividly demonstrated by a woman who experienced an unexpected twist after purchasing a flight — only to end up traveling by bus to Chicago, Illinois.

According to her account, she had booked the trip with American Airlines but was surprised to find herself driven to her destination instead of flown there. To support her claim, she shared a TikTok video capturing the experience. The footage revealed a bus interior designed to look like an airplane cabin, complete with screens displaying the message: “Landline. Welcome aboard.”

when you buy a flight from American Airlines but they board you on to a bus on the tarmac so you think they’re driving you to the plane but they just start driving to the destination 😀🙂😤 #traveltok #americanairlines

The woman posted proof of her allegations in a TikTok video that showed the bus ride. The bus had screens with the words, “Landline. Welcome aboard,” written on them. The clip was posted with the caption, “When you buy a flight from American Airlines, but they board you onto a bus on the tarmac, so you think they’re driving you to the plane, but they just start driving to the destination.”

In a follow-up video, the woman explained that she had bought a flight from Southern Indiana to O’Hare Airport in Chicago for $431.72, only to be taken by bus. The TikToker then went on to give a comprehensive story of what had happened. She noted that the flight had been booked days earlier and that she had received confirmation emails. Although she did not read through all the emails, she stated that throughout they referred to it as a flight. She then responded to a couple of questions that had followed her initial video. She admitted that she did not note the flight duration in the emails sent to her and only looked at her boarding and departure times. The woman noted that she had gone through security and the boarding process as usual until she noticed she and other passengers were taken to a bus.

At first, she thought they were boarding a bus to drive them to the plane. By the time she had admitted that this was, in fact, her “flight”, the bus was already on the road. The TikToker shared that when they got to their destination, the bus passed the departures and took them back into the airport, only for them all to have to walk back. “Anyway, my thought on it is, it feels like a scam,” the woman concluded.

TikTok reacted with a mix of shock and humor. “$400 for a bus ride?!?! I’d be mad as hell,” one wrote. “So you drove yourself to the AIRPORT to board a BUS to a place that was only 2 hours away by car…AND you paid 431.72 United States of America dollars!?” another wrote. “They didn’t even use jet fuel, and they charged you over $400,” someone else noted. “Damn near $500 for a BUS ride?! I would end up on the no-fly list,” another confessed. “I don’t care what anyone says, there is ZERO expectation that American AIRLINES would give you a bus ride to your destination!! I’d be finding a lawyer. This is outrageous,” one TikToker advised.

“If I went through TSA for a bus ride, I’d be beside myself angry,” another added. “I feel like this is a recession indicator,” a user noted. Some TikTokers turned to humor. “They got you on American Landlines,” one joked. “Make sure you put your phone on bus mode,” another jested. “Not the bus interior looking like a plane. LMFAO,” a last user noted.

Ultimately, the incident serves as a reminder that modern travel demands both awareness and accountability from all involved parties. As technology continues to advance and international connections deepen, maintaining open communication and honesty will be key to creating a more reliable and fair travel environment — one where travelers are empowered with knowledge and can explore the world with greater confidence and security.
