A woman from North Carolina recounted how shocked and betrayed her sister felt after discovering a jacket she had gifted to a friend hanging among secondhand clothes in a thrift store. She shared her sister’s emotional reaction in a viral TikTok video, which has since amassed over eight million views and thousands of comments.

In the clip, the group was shopping when they came across a denim jacket. The back of the jacket displayed a hand-drawn illustration of a cowgirl with the word “Rebel” painted in white above it, while “John 3:16” was written on the front pockets. When the sister recognized it as her own jacket, she appeared visibly heartbroken. Her sibling, who was filming the moment, encouraged her to repurchase it from Goodwill.

As the girls talked, it came to light that the jacket had been a Christmas gift. Feeling hurt on her sister’s behalf, the woman shared the video with a brief yet pointed caption: *“Friend is a strong word.”*

Netizens Debate On Whether North Carolina Woman’s Reaction Was Necessary

Reactions to the clip were divided into two distinct perspectives on what constitutes proper etiquette when receiving a gift. One group emphasized the emotional significance and effort invested in handmade items, arguing that donating such gifts is inconsiderate. The other group contended that once a gift is given, the recipient is entitled to decide what to do with it, as it becomes their possession.

“The best thing my mom taught me as a kid is that once you give someone a gift, you lose control over what happens to it. Yeah, it’s upsetting that your friend gave it away, but it’s no longer yours to decide what happens to it,” one user noted. Another user gave a perspective on the practicality of keeping items: “Honest question. If they didn’t like it, they should have just pretended they did and kept it forever?” Another stated that the recipient owed the sister nothing, “Just because you gift something to someone doesn’t mean they’re required to like it or keep it.”

The sentimental side explained their opinions. “I don’t care if I hated the thing, I wouldn’t give it away 😭 This is so mean,” one noted. “When someone makes something for you, it’s like the purest gift you could receive. My heart would break if I saw my work on a thrift rack,” a TikToker wrote, pointing out the sanctity of handmade efforts. “Donating a HAND PAINTED GIFT is crazy,” another agreed. One user blatantly called the act “one of the cruelest things.”

The viral video from North Carolina has sparked a discussion about the ethics of gifting and regifting. While a gift is often given with good intentions, the recipient may not find it personally useful or appealing. But does that necessarily mean the gesture wasn’t appreciated?
